Money Mindset Matters -My Relationship with $$$

If you think your mindset and money have no connection - think again.  Many years ago when I went from a two income family to a one income family, I had to adjust my spending habits.  While it didn't happen overnight, I realized that I was continuing on a cycle that left me in a place that was uncomfortable.  When I say uncomfortable, I mean having to  transfer money from one account to another to ensure that funds were available to cover items that I purchased.  My relationship with money was like this, if I had the money, of course I would have to spend it.  What did I buy?  Who knows, I don't even remember.   However, I do remember how my bad spending habits contributed to frustration because I knew better.

Bad spending habits can become a serious addiction. You can talk to yourself as much as you want, but if you don't change your mindset about money, you will forever be spending and buying things you don't need.  The reality in my head was, girl, if you don't get it together you are going to dig yourself into a ditch.  Now mind you, I didn't lack for anything, but I certainly didn't use wisdom on every purchase that I made.

It wasn't until 2-3 years ago that I had an epiphany, I started changing the way I saw my financial situation.  Yes, I was paying my bills, going out, dressing nice and doing what I wanted, but I didn't feel like I had a handle on my financial stability.  I desired to be in the state of abundance and not in the state of money transferring. This process took some time and it was not an overnight miracle-I had to self-assess and make some changes.

Here's a glimpse into how I altered my life. I love eating out, but at times I would have to make a decision. Do I eat what I have at home since I'm going out over the weekend, or do I splurge and buy food every night after work?  My waistline could not afford eating out every night, so I started cooking my dinner. Cooking my dinner more helped me to have enough for lunch the next day or two.  Since I usually go to lunch with friends while I'm at work, I started picking and choosing what days I wanted to treat myself for lunch.

I never go to the grocery store hungry because we all know that's a no -no.   I actually make a list before I go to the store - it does help you to stay on track.  I now make wiser decisions while grocery shopping, asking myself, do I really need that?  Is that healthy for me?  Wow - talk about self-discipline and conviction.

As far as shopping for clothes, I still love a good sale. I have figured out the stores marketing schemes.  Would you like to know what it is.....wait for the sale!  Don't buy anything when it first comes out because as the weeks go by, that same item(s) will be reduced.  Be smart!!

Lastly, I begin to create a plan to pay off credit cards and reduce monthly subscriptions that I don't need.  I kept the ones that really matter - HULU. Let's not even talk about cable, I will forever have a 45.00 internet bill because I'm still a Time Warner Customer - gotta love my Firestick.  I have my own movie theater and I'm loving it.

I have many other tips, but I'm not going to bore you with them.  What I truly want to convey is, if you are trying to get ahead financially and see some areas where you can improve, you must change your mindset about money.   If you want change; it starts with you.

This journey is quite interesting, and I believe if you change a few things, eventually you will master the art of changing your relationship with money.  It worked for me - it can work for you too!

Have you ever been in a place of feeling uncomfortable? I don't mean the same feeling when you are wearing something too tight; I mean in life.   Life can toss us many situations that may put us in an uncomfortable situation(s), and leave us feeling out of place.  Changes can also contribute towards uncomfortable feelings, especially if the change(s) is not your choice.

After waking up early to talk to my daughter because she wanted to give me a birthday gift, I kissed and thanked her and dozed off back to sleep.  I had a dream that I was in an empty apartment. The front door had a dead bolt lock, but the dead bolt was missing so there was a hole in the door.

Heartfelt Notes to My Daughter Series- Part 1

Dear Daughter,
I truly desire your lives to be as fruitful as mine was when I was a teenager and young lady.  My mother and father (your grandmother/grandfather) instilled many values, morals and gave me a good solid foundation.  As I watch you develop, I can only hope and pray that I have instilled some of those same lessons into your lives. Values and morals are important because it is your title, and remains with you through-out life. When people know what you stand for and what you will not accept, they respect you more.

Constant boredom is a sign that you are in need of a LIFE-lift!

Have you ever had someone say to you, “I’m so bored,  or, there isn't anything to do?  What do you say?  What is your natural response?  Do they actually think you have the remedy? Boredom is an expression of our sense of emptiness and limitation. We think we’re functioning properly only if we do certain types of activities which is inherently wrong. We’re designed to do anything and to enjoy everything within reason.

The phrase “It’s My Time & It’s My Season, sometimes mean a time of separation, loneliness and doubt. But rest assure that on the other side is that place where God has intended for you to be.That place and time where no other can enter but you. So go through that rough season that you’re in with your head held high, hands raised with a right now praise that is intentional. And watch God work. Be Blessed.

Periodically, we should take an assessment of ourselves to determine if we are in need of a change. Changes could be in the way we talk to others, prejudge, criticize, etc. Or maybe it is an internal change that is required.

Where Did the Time Go?

How many times have you heard people ask, “where did the day go?” or, “I can’t believe it’s night time already”.  I’m sure we all wish that we could turn back the hands of time for whatever reason.  When we were young, time never seemed to be a major issue.  We focused more on having a good time, playing and doing all the fun things to make life exciting.   As the years passed, we begin to think about what we didn’t accomplish, and start writing down items to complete.  We start to value that thing called time.

Once in a while we take a look at ourselves, and find things we like and things we don’t.  In essence, we are all a work in progress – with the main goal of becoming better in life.   So, in an effort to take the first step – flow with me on this one.  Finish this statement (on your own or make a bold statement) and place it on your wall so you can view it each day until it transpires.

I am very good at______________ but I would like to become better at ______________________.
