Sitting in the nail shop the other day, I had intended to relax and enjoy the quiet time since I was the only customer. In walks a lady who gracefully picked out her polish, plopped herself into the pedicure chair and off she went. I couldn’t help to over-hear the conversation between she and the manicurist. Apparently, the conversation was about men, relationships, and how you can’t just have one man. The lady went on to say “I just don’t know about getting married, but if I do, I’ll have to have a man on the side.” Now, my ears grew as big as 12 inch paper plates – because I had to hear the justification behind such an immoral statement. Of course, her reasoning came down to one thing – self gratification (all about what she could obtain).
Also, while watching the final episode of The Housewives of Atlanta, my mouth flew open when Cynthia, who was minutes away from tying the knot said, “Well, if it doesn’t work out, I just need to know that I have a way out”, speaking as though divorce was her lifeline to escape should she change her mind. She sounded like she was buying a a materialistic item where she could get a refund. After spending so much money to have a wedding, wouldn’t you at least fight for what you love?I contemplated this for a while and thought, have we really lost the value of commitment in relationships? Do we really believe that if things aren’t what we expect them to be, then we just jump ship? How selfish, and unrealistic we have become.
Commitment is all about sacrifice, love and ministry and most of all respect. I love my husband, and just like any man, they can work a nerve at times (and we can work theirs as well), but it’s the value of commitment that helps me to understand what I need to do to make things better. It’s the value of commitment that encourages me to communicate with my mate to bring about change to grow and become better together, and as individuals. If the relationship is worth saving, and either party is not being abused physically, I would say work it out!
The perfect love is the love that God has for us. He teaches us how to love, and if we truly love Him, we can work through and stay committed in relationships. Let’s learn to be like Christ, He would never give up on us – so how can we give up on each other.
